How Long Does German A1 Really Take? (Weeks vs. Months)

It is the question we get asked most often: "I need my visa quickly. How long will it take until I am ready for the A1 exam?"

If you search the internet, you will find confusing answers. Some say "2 weeks," others say "6 months."

Here is the truth. We look at the official numbers—and how you can drastically reduce these numbers.

The Official Number: 80 to 200 Hours

The Goethe-Institut and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) state that you need about 80 to 200 teaching units (45 minutes each) for the A1 level.

Why is the range so wide? Because it depends on several factors:

  • Are you learning in a large group (slow)?
  • Are you studying intensively alone (fast)?
  • Do you already know a similar language (e.g., English), or is the Latin alphabet new to you?

The "Snail Effect" in Language Schools

In a standard integration course or evening class, A1 often takes 2 to 6 months.

Why so long?

  1. The "Convoy Effect": The course is only as fast as the slowest student. If one person has a question, 15 others have to wait.
  2. Bureaucracy: Roll calls, breaks, organizational matters.
  3. Fixed Schedules: If the course only takes place twice a week, you forget half of what you learned before the next lesson.

The "Turbo Effect" with V-IZ (Online)

When you learn online with video courses, all that "dead time" disappears. You don't have to wait for anyone. You can skip topics you understand and repeat difficult ones.

Our experience shows: Motivated self-learners often complete A1 with us in 4 to 6 weeks.

Calculation for Fast Learners:

  • You study 2 hours per day (intensive, no distractions).
  • That is approx. 14 hours per week.
  • After approx. 6 weeks, you have covered the entire material and are ready for exam preparation.

How to Cut Your Time in Half

Want to do it even faster? Here is the trick:

  1. Daily instead of Weekly: It is better to study 30 minutes every day than 4 hours once a week. Your brain retains information better this way.
  2. Focus on Relevance: Don't learn all the zoo animal names or colors. Learn what appears in the exam (introductions, numbers, requests/questions). Our course is optimized exactly for this.
  3. Integration into Daily Life: Listen to the lessons while cooking or riding the bus.

It's in Your Hands

Don't wait for the next semester start at the local language school. Your time is ticking.

If you start today and do one lesson every day, you could hold your certificate in your hands next month.
